Background. Prevention of dental diseases remains an urgent and integral part of dentistry. The level of oral health literacy is determined by various indicators, including the choice of oral hygiene products and items, as well as the presence of proper hygiene skills. The condition of the oral cavity is influenced not only by the regularity, consistency, and technique of toothbrushing, but also by how well therapeutic and prophylactic products and items are selected. Oral hygiene directly correlates with the intensity rates of dental hard tissue caries and gingival inflammation.
Aim. To substantiate and improve the principles of oral hygiene care in children depending on their oral health status by developing individualized preventive recommendations aimed at maintaining oral health and preventing the development of major dental diseases.
Materials and Methods. Health education is one of the methods of public health upbringing, with particular attention paid to children of various age groups. It involves informing patients about tooth structure, its role in human life, and the impact of dental plaque on disease onset. Health education is conducted both individually during dental appointments and within organized school/preschool groups. In organized groups, the primary method of oral hygiene training is a hygiene lesson, involving educators, teachers, and a school nurse. Hygiene lessons are divided into a theoretical part and a practical part (toothbrushing training). When preparing these lessons, children’s age, baseline knowledge level, and the capabilities of each age group are strictly taken into account.
Results. Following the health education program, a significant increase in children’s oral hygiene awareness was observed, alongside an improvement in toothbrushing skills and the formation of sustained motivation for regular oral home care. The efficacy of the training sessions directly depended on the children’s age and the cohesive integration of theoretical and practical components of instruction.
Conclusions. Consequently, the level of oral hygiene directly impacts the condition of dental hard tissues and the oral mucosa. Therefore, an essential component of a pediatric dentist’s work is not only the selection of individualized hygiene products but also the comprehensive development of correct oral care skills in the patient.
