Abstract

Aim: to carry out the analysis of up-to-date nozzles for irradiation of periodontal tissues which are used for photoactivated disinfection; to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the existing equipment; on the basis of the obtained data to develop and produce a nozzle which would be more effective in the follow-up of patients with generalized periodontal disease.
Materials and methods. Based on the data analysis, we developed a sketch of the nozzle, which allows us to treat the periodontal area in the region of teeth 4–6, evenly distributes the required laser radiation power, and makes it possible to work in the poorly accessible oral cavity areas. The necessary parameters were also calculated which would help obtain a laser radiation spot with targeted properties. As a result, a nozzle of in-house design was made. An experiment was conducted to record the time spent on the procedure of photoactivated disinfection in patients with generalized periodontal diseases (periodontal disease of the first degree), in which we used three main types of nozzles, and the developed nozzle.
Results. The nozzle for irradiation of periodontal tissues was developed, designed and produced. We conducted an experiment to record the time spent on the procedure of photoactivated disinfection in patients with generalized periodontal diseases (periodontal disease of the first degree), in which we used three main types of nozzles, and the developed nozzle. The calculations found that one periodontal pocket lasing by applying a nozzle of the first type took an average of 120 seconds; the use of a nozzle of the second type took 58 seconds, and the third type – 68 seconds. Periodontal pocket lasing by applying the designed nozzle took 34 seconds, which was 41 % faster than the most effective existing nozzle of the second type.
Conclusion: the designed nozzle makes it possible to significantly reduce the time of photoactivated disinfection session and to expand the scope of this method application. We see the prospect for this technique application in the treatment and prevention of periodontal diseases by including photoactivated disinfection into the occupational oral hygiene protocol for all patient groups. The effectiveness of this impact in this case is under study.
Key words: periodontium, photoactivated disinfection, nozzle, photosensitiser.
